The island is approximately 25 miles in length from North to South with an additional 4,5 miles, if we include the small islet of Saria, which was formed after the erosion of its isthmus which opened up the narrow channel between the two parts.
The island is oblong in shape and consisting of mountainous barren countryside. Combined with valleys overgrown with vines, producing a very good quality wine.
The islands' coastline is as much as 160 km. Daily flights connect the island with Rhodes. By ferry-boat from Piraeus port, it takes about 18 hours with numerous stops on the way.
Karpathos is not only sandy beaches; it is also beautiful villages, unique landscapes and traditional Karpathian homes. Tradition is still alive and part of everyday life.
The visitor will have the opportunity to participate and enjoy unique moments at the local festivities, in which the people after singing and eating traditional Karpathian dishes feel the need to dance. The climate of the island is definitely Mediterranean.
One main characteristic of this type of climate, are the strong winds during part of summer, well-known as "meltemia", whereas during wintertime, there are low levels of rain and mild temperatures.
War and conquest define Karpathos' history. From 7th till 10th century, vicious pirates from N. Africa and Asia, cause terror and fear to people of Karpathos, especially to those who lived near the coasts. |
